How to care
for your jeans
(and the planet)
Seven easy, earth-friendly tips
from our in-house denim experts...
WAIT BETWEEN WASHES
The sweet spot for washing your jeans is after about ten wears. Washing less builds character and preserves the integrity of your denim—plus it saves water.
HIT THE SPOT(S)
Before turning to the washing machine, use a toothbrush and a gentle soap to spot clean any noticeable stains.
KEEP IT COOL
Wash your jeans inside out in cool water with all zips and buttons fastened. It’s gentler, helps preserve the color and uses way less energy.
GO NATURAL
Avoid bleach and harsh detergents. White vinegar works wonders as a spot cleaner on darker denim, and adding a half cup to the water the first time you wash your jeans will help reduce any color bleed.
TRY AIR-DRYING
Hang your jeans to dry in a shady spot. Avoid sunlight and the dryer to reduce fading and greenhouse-gas emissions.
STAY OUT OF THE LOOP
Pull your jeans up by the waistband instead of the belt loops—it’s much sturdier.
BE ON THE MEND
Patch or sew areas that get a lot of wear and tear, like between the thighs and on the knees.
